Age Discrimination Solicitors
Age is one of the 9 ‘Protected Characteristics’ under the Equality Act 2010. If you are treated less favourably because of your age, you could be entitled to compensation. The protected characteristic applies to both younger and older employees. You are protected from discrimination during all stages of the employment relationship, including the recruitment stage.
Common examples of discrimination on the basis of age can include:
- Rejection from a prospective role because the employer is “looking for someone younger”;
- ‘Banter’ and jokes about age;
- Compulsorily retiring an employee because of their age (unless objectively justified);
- Choosing an employee for redundancy because of their age.
If you believe you have been subjected to unlawful discrimination on the grounds of your age, it is important that you seek advice immediately. There is a very short limitation period for discrimination claims, and failure to meet that limitation could mean that you are unable to obtain any redress from the Employment Tribunal.
Here at Ison Harrison Solicitors we are experts in discrimination legislation. Our Head of Department, Mr Yunus Lunat, has been featured as an expert in Employment Law and Discrimination on the BBC, Channel 4 and many other news outlets.
