According to Home Office statistics published in February, over 4 million UK visa holders have now created an account to access their eVisa. However, an estimated 600,000 individuals have yet to switch from their physical documents to a digital eVisa.
The eVisa rollout, which began last year, is part of the UK government’s push to establish a fully digital immigration system. Physical documents are being phased out, with most migrants in the UK now holding digital proof of their immigration status in the form of an eVisa.
Grace Period Extended
To ensure a smooth transition to eVisas, the Home Office has extended the grace period for using expired biometric residence permits (BRPs) or EU Settlement Scheme biometric residence cards (BRCs). Initially set to end on 31 March 2025, the grace period will now run until 1 June 2025.
This extension allows individuals with a BRP or BRC that expired on or after 31 December 2024 to use their expired documents for international travel up to 1 June 2025, provided they still hold valid underlying immigration status.
From 2 June 2025, expired BRPs and EUSS BRCs will no longer serve as valid evidence of immigration status for travel to the UK. This policy will remain under review.
Accessing Your eVisa
An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration status and the conditions tied to your permission to live or work in the UK.
To access your eVisa, you must create a UKVI account. This will allow you to view and share information about your immigration status, such as your right to work or rent in the UK, through the “view and prove” service.
You can use a valid or expired BRP to create your UKVI account and access your eVisa.
Travelling with an eVisa
For eVisa holders, international travel is more convenient, as digital statuses can be verified quickly at the border.
Your eVisa will be linked to your passport in your UKVI account. It is important to keep your passport or ID card details up to date in your account and notify the Home Office of any changes to ensure your immigration status is easily identified at the UK border.
To avoid delays or issues while travelling, update your personal details in advance and carry your current passport with you.
