This National Children’s Month, we recognize and celebrate children who are neurodivergent.
What Is Neurodiveristy?
What does that mean? Is it a buzzword, or a medical condition? Is my child neurodivergent?
Neurodiversity is a term which arose from the disability rights movement. It challenges the idea of there being a ‘normal’ way to think. It is a term for “a person whose brain functions, learns, and processes information differently to the way society expects.”
15-20% of children in the UK are neurodivergent. They may have autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, or Tourette’s Syndrome. Some children with learning disabilities or mental health conditions may describe themselves as neurodivergent, while others may not identify with the term. Neurodiversity is not a medical condition and your child does not need a formal diagnosis to use the term. It is simply a term that celebrates difference. It can therefore be empowering for anyone who feels that they think differently.
Neurodivergent children have a lot of strengths and abilities that their peers don’t have, and we celebrate that. However, society is simply not designed with neurodivergent children in mind. This means that neurodivergent children can experience a lot of challenges as they navigate their way through life. Approximately 40% of children in care are neurodivergent or disabled.
