The secretary of the British Association of Paediatric Urologists has expressed concern that people with limited experience are carrying out home circumcisions.
Felim Murphy stated “unfortunately children have died in the last number of years in Britain and Ireland from circumcision-related complications.”
Although healthcare workers have to be registered with the Care Quality Commission before being allowed to carry out home circumcisions, due to a loophole individuals with no medical training do not.
Ison Harrison’s Clinical Negligence Partner, commented “although circumcision is a common procedure it is important to remember that it is surgery and, as with all operations, involves an element of risk.
It is common sense that problems are more likely to occur when the person carrying out t
he circumcision has had no formal training, although we have also advised a number of clients who have suffered injuries as a result of circumcisions performed in a clinical setting”.
